What a timezone actually is
Every timezone is defined as an offset from UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), the global reference clock. New York in winter is UTC−5; London is UTC+0; Tokyo is UTC+9. Not all offsets are whole hours — India is UTC+5:30 and Nepal is UTC+5:45.
Many regions also shift by an hour for part of the year under Daylight Saving Time (DST). Crucially, not everywhere observes it, and those that do change on different dates — which is why converting a time correctly can depend on the calendar date, not just the two zones.

Why isn't the difference a whole number of hours?
Some zones use 30- or 45-minute offsets (India, Nepal, parts of Australia), so the gap between two places can include a half or quarter hour.
Does this account for daylight saving?
DST changes a zone's offset for part of the year, so the correct conversion depends on the date. Always check with the actual date in mind, especially near the spring/autumn switchovers.
What's the difference between UTC and GMT?
For everyday purposes they're the same reference time. UTC is the modern technical standard; GMT is the older name still used casually.
Why did my meeting end up an hour off?
Almost always DST: one side had already changed clocks and the other hadn't. Sharing the time in UTC avoids the confusion.
